Our Team

Jonathan Brookes is the founder and Director of Brookes Attorneys. Jonathan acquired his LLB degree from UKZN in 2003, after that he went on to serve his articles at a law firm in the Upper Highway. Jonathan was admitted as an attorney with rights of appearance in the High Court in 2008. Jonathan moved to the UK and worked at a law firm in London for 3 years. He returned to Durban in 2010 where he worked until he decided to open a law firm of his own.

Jonathan established Brookes Attorneys in 2017 and now heads up the Commercial Law department.

Nassiha obtained her BA LLB degree from the University of UKZN in 2015. She served her articles at Gavin Price Attorneys and was admitted as an attorney in August 2019. Nassiha joined Brookes Attorneys in August 2024 when Gavin Price Attorneys merged with Brookes Attorneys, and she specialises in Civil Law.

Robert graduated with a BA and LLB from the University of Natal (Pietermaritzburg) in 1992. He completed his articles at Chris Van der Merwe and Partners, was admitted as an attorney in 1995, and later joined Gavin Price Attorneys in 2002. Following the merger with Brookes Attorneys in August 2024, he now practices as a senior associate. Robert specializes in Magistrate’s Court Civil Litigation, with 20 years of experience in both district and regional courts in KwaZulu-Natal. He also lectures prospective candidate attorneys in magistrate’s court practice and procedure.

Tazmin obtained her BA LLB & LLB degree from Rhodes University in 2022. She served her articles at Laubscher Attorneys Inc. Tazmin joined Brookes Attorneys in July 2024 and specialises in Debt Collection Matters.

Justin acquired his LLB and BSocSci degree from UKZN in 2011. After serving articles he was admitted as an attorney. With a passion for Labour law, he then worked for a National Union based in Empangeni, where after he returned to Durban working as a Legal adviser. He joined Brookes in 2020, with a focus on the labour law department, where he specialises in Company HR and IR, compliance, and CCMAs.

Mark completed his LLB at the IIE’s Varsity College, Durban North, in 2023 and began as a Candidate Attorney at Brookes Attorneys in 2024.

While at Varsity, Mark held many positions, such as being class representative as well as Chairperson of the Campus’ Social Committee, showing his capabilities of staying on deadline and ensuring that he completes every task to the best of his capabilities.

Desiree Murugan, our Conveyancing Paralegal, has been in the legal field since 1989. Starting in bookkeeping and later as a litigation secretary, she was inspired to become a Conveyancing Paralegal. Over the past 30 years, she has handled various conveyancing transactions, including bond cancellations, registrations, transfers, and sectional title/township developments. Desiree enjoys working with diverse clients who motivate and challenge her. She has three adult children and loves spending time with her family, cooking, walking, enjoying nature, and watching sports. Des is a professional, career-driven person who loves a good laugh.

Kaylyn Varley is our Legal Secretary who is the main support system for all associates. Kay ensures that everything is in neat and working order. She absolutely loves it when the odd client brings their pets in to consults. She is a skilled player of Rock Paper Scissors- she wins every time.
